to bloom,
for the ivory blossoms of your branched arms
to break through the skin.

It took you longer
to open,
to reveal the purple-tinged flowers
that lay hidden inside of you,
the shape of saucers.

If you had been planted alone
you wouldn’t think you were different,

but you watched the others;
the blushing petals spread through the crabapple trees,
you waited quietly
for what you did not know
was already there.
